After a great welcome back to the community with the Live Theatre is Back! fundraiser, the Pearl theater kicked off its eleventh season with Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will? with a bang. The Pearl Theater is pleased to announce their first youth production of the season, Robin Hood, written by local Dawson High School graduate and Pearland resident, Tabetha Harrison.

Harrison and her family have been instrumental members of the Pearl Theater community for several years now. She regularly directs, teaches classes and summer camps; and now she emerges as a playwright for the organization. “We are exceptionally proud to see Tabetha growing up in the Pearl and taking on more and more responsibility and meeting new challenges,” says founding Artistic Director, Renee van Nifterik. Harrison approached van Nifterik about the play idea for the youth production, saying that “none of the Robin Hood scripts [she] found online really spoke” to her, so she was given the green light to begin writing her own version.

Harrison’s thoughts were to take “well-known characters and tropes and either amplify them or alter them altogether,” she says in order to provide the youth actors of the Pearl more meaningful and challenging roles. Harrison, along with the many families who regularly participate in the theatre’s youth productions have been excited to continue performing in plays, as we face the difficulties presented by Covid. Through careful social distancing and the use of masks, the young actors have persevered.
