Tejano dance night spins off to a 2-month series for the VFW Post 7109 in Pearland. A successful event held early this summer themed around the popular genre of music encouraged organizers to plan additional events. The next Tejano night in the series will take place on Friday, August 18 at the 4202 W. Walnut location.
The VFW Post 7109 has a strong history in Pearland and was known as “the place to be” on Friday nights in the 1970s and 1980s where locals enjoyed a dance or other creative entertainment including wrestling matches and spaghetti dinners. The Friday night events slowly disappeared over the years.
Recently, a new interest and community involvement are putting the VFW Post 7109 in Pearland back on center stage with efforts to raise funds to replace the roof. The local post is hosting a variety of events and forming partnerships to reinvent programming.
“We’ve been trying to build back up to having events at the hall with people looking to the VFW as a community center and a place for family entertainment,” said Ron Risdon, VFW post commander.
Lety Jimenez-Lehr with Elements Massage approached Risdon with her idea to bring new energy to the hall with a Tejano dance night featuring a local DJ. The ‘test’ event drew a record crowd who enjoyed a mix of music including line dancing, country, rock & roll and of course Tejano music.
Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance or at the door. Limited seating is available in the big hall so advance ticket purchases are encouraged. Soft drinks, beer and snacks will be available for purchase during the event. All proceeds benefit the VFW Post 7109.
