Antiques, Beads and Crafty People in Pearland has anchored the corner at 2517 Broadway Street since 2002. Mother and daughter duo Helen Roberts and Chawnia Meeks welcome new and regular customers with the same enthusiasm about beading every day.
The walls of the 2,100 square-foot local store are lined with a selection of over 15,000 beads. Beads ranging from semi-precious, glass, freshwater pearls, Chinese crystal, Swarovski crystals, Japanese seed beads plus specialty beads are at home with a variety of tools, beading supplies, books and collectibles.
“We’ve seen several bead stores in the surrounding Houston and Clear Lake area come and go over the years,” says Helen. “Our customers become family, we have good vibes here and create a rapport with them. We have regular customers coming from Sugar Land, Downtown Houston and Pearland plus new customers visiting from as far away as Alaska, Australia, England and Hawaii who find us in national beading magazines.”

Beading Classes
Antiques, Beads and Crafty People started offering beading classes 15 years ago and still offer sessions for basic beading, basic wirework plus advanced classes that have changed as styles and trends morphed over the years.
After a brief hiatus following Hurricane Harvey, classes resumed to include 12-15 sessions per month. Class sizes are intimate with no more than 8 students per session for a variety of ages and skill levels. The mother/daughter duo along with instructors teach beading to Girl Scout Troops, lead an off-site class for a 55+ retirement community in Pearland and host birthday parties or girl’s night out beading classes in their store.
“Beading is therapeutic in so many ways, we love teaching people how to bead,” added Chawnia. “We each have our own specialty, Mom is expert in silversmithing and I love the Peyote style of beading.”
The connection to their customers extends to many special requests with Helen beading wedding and quinceanera dresses. Adding crystals to dance recital dresses and blinging out a bride’s cowboy boots are now normal requests for the local shop. A long-time customer recently asked Helen to restore the beadwork on her 1960s era Mardi Gras queen’s scepter as a keepsake for her granddaughter.
The shop still carries a few collectible pieces – a nod to the store’s beginnings when it carried more antiques. Vintage jewelry, instructional books and a bead bar add to the shop’s whimsical fun along with a 22-year old cockatiel named Dusty who welcomes visitors to the store.
