Stylist Cammy Ondrey (@thecamillafinish) of Pearland’s Urbaneve salon shares 5 tips on how we should take care of our hair during Covid-19 closures.
1. Take A Break From Heat
Use this time to give your hair a break from heat. If you are essential in the workforce, try wearing braids, cute hats, volume pony tails, half up messy buns – basically styles that don’t require heat.
2. Sleep In A Mask
Sleep in a deep conditioning mask. Especially If you are finding yourself at home and unable to leave the house. Use this time to really pamper your hair. There are tons of recipes on Pinterest, including a simple favorite of Cammy’s – honey and coconut oil.
3. Avoid Tension
If you are wearing a ponytail everyday, there are a couple ways to improve the well-being of your hair by using scrunchies, teleties or fabric bands instead of elastics. This helps eliminate terrible creases or bends in the hair when its down and also reduces breakage where the hair tie sits. Also, if you’re wearing your hair in a pony tail every day, move sure you are moving it around to different areas of the head so that it doesn’t have the same tension point ie., alternate between low, high and mid-ponytails.
4. Skip A Couple
Skip a couple shampoos. Try going an extra day between shampoos so that your hair color wears down slower, your natural oils will hydrate your hair and you’re stretching your shampoo further.
5. Resist The Temptation
Do not resort to coloring your own hair unless you feel extremely confident in it and have the tools you need for it. While the struggle can be real, Cammy recommends you wait until a professional can update your color. Cammy, a blond herself and a master blonding stylist knows that doing her own color will not give her the results she needs. At this time, Cammy is rocking the “lived in” look and knows no one is judging her because we’re all in the same boat right now. Worst case scenario, there are tinted temporary sprays and powders to help mask gray hair. Another popular option these days is using eye-shadows and mascara to blend in the gray. “As long as its temporary, do what you have to do,” according to Cammy.
