Art for all! See Yellamma – Birth of a Goddess at the Silambam Houston Cultural Arts Center in Pearland on Saturday, November 9 starting at 6 p.m.
This original work by US-based artist Archana Raja is a riveting folk tale about a rural goddess who emerges from the travails of a regular woman. Born a princess, she leaves her privileged life to marry a wandering sage. After that, she endures a harsh and unjust existence, forced to conform to societal pressures. Her desires to be a lover and later a mother are thwarted by patriarchy and systemic pressures. Does she win or lose at the end? This work attempts to wed the intimacy of folk storytelling with the rhythms and vocabulary of Kuchipudi.
Tickets to any ArtStream concert are pay-what-you-can when reserved up to two weeks in advance.
