Pearland Alliance for Arts & Culture Sponsors Visions of India on loan from the Kannappan Art Museum
Three, hand-carved statues from blocks of granite are striking examples featured in the 100+ pieces of the Visions of India exhibit on loan from the Kannappan Art Museum, a newly opened museum in Pearland, 2341 N. Galveston Avenue, Suite 200.
The statues which originated from two sets of three journeyed from India to Washington D.C. One set of statues will venture to The Smithsonian museums in Washington D.C. and the second set continued their journey to Pearland Texas courtesy of the Kannappan Art Museum.
Pearland resident Sam Kannappan curates the Visions of India exhibit sponsored by the Pearland Alliance for Arts & Culture (PAA&C). Mr. Kannappan spoke about future plans for a museum to be built in Pearland during the May 26th ribbon-cutting event commemorating the opening of the first museum in Pearland.
He emphasized a ‘why wait attitude’ as he embarked on the humble beginnings of a museum space by curating pieces from India to kick off the current installation.
Cultural Heritage Museum
The intimate 390 square-foot museum installation serves as an exhibit space until a permanent museum facility is built in Pearland. Currently visitors can view the 100+ collection featuring Indian art and artifacts reflecting both India’s culture and art. Some pieces reference everyday living in India while others reference rich cultural heritage.
Visitors will also find photographs and displays depicting images of the area in India used as inspiration for the architectural design of the museum to be built within Pearland in the near future.
Behind the Vision
Mr. Kannappan was instrumental during the design and formation of the Sri Meenakshi Temple in Pearland which is the only temple dedicated to the Goddess Meenakshi off the shores of India. Built in the 1970’s, it’s the third temple built in the United States and it replicates the original in Madurai, India.
Additionally, Mr. Kannappan serves as an advisory board member of the Asia Society Texas Center facility near the Houston Museum District. Currently, he serves as the Chairman of the PAA&C Building Committee with his vast experience in not only development projects but also specialized, architectural works/replications.
Local Influence
“The Pearland Alliance for Arts & Culture is so thrilled to have been asked to partner and present Pearland’s first cultural museum,” according to Heidi Wiess executive director of the Pearland Alliance for Arts & Culture.
“We are providing an opportunity for the Pearland community to view selected artistic and sculptural artifacts that will be a part of the future Kannappan Art Museum and learn about the rich Indian culture developed over the centuries,” added Wiess. The museum model will be a first of its kind, displaying the rich Indian history and contributions by the Indian culture to America, but also depicting America’s contributions to India.”
Visions of India will expand and seeks to be a full immersion installation. Programming for a 24 to 36 month period is currently in the planning stages with a focus on a multi –sensory experience. Plans include the addition of interactive programming for kids and flat screens for video and discussion of exhibit pieces.
